Newlands Residents Association - passing the baton!
Most property owners living in central Newlands won't remember a time before the Newlands Residents Association. The NRA has been picking up litter, cleaning graffiti, running security projects and commenting on controversial building plans for the best part of three decades.

With the huge demand for home deliveries, it is not surprising that motorbike riders are finding shortcuts through the area. The number of scooters is only going to increase and they do an important job - but are pretty scary when they suddenly appear in places they shouldn't.

All property owners can become members of Newlands CID, the non-profit company that delivers our supplementary services.
Members can vote in board elections, approve budgets and participate in discussions to promote transparency and community engagement.

The Newlands Community Improvement District is a non-profit company so it doesn't have shareholders. Instead it has members who can vote at general meetings, nominate and elect Directors, and generally help shape the management of the company.

The Newlands Community Improvement District - Newlands CID - is finally getting operational! We officially came into being in early July but only received funds in the second week of August, which is when we could really make financial commitments on your behalf.

Newlands CID Status July 2024
July 2024 is the first month that Additional Rates are being collected from property owners within the Newlands Community Improvement District. The City will make monthly payments to the CID which will in turn deliver the 'supplementary services' detailed in the Business Plan.

The final Business Plan was substantially the same as the draft Business Plan since no comments were received by the Steering Committee which materially impacted the or financial aspects of the draft Business Plan.

Newlands CID Status June 2024
On 31 May 2024, the City of Cape Town approved our application to establish a CID. This was item number SPC 07/05/24 on the City Agenda for that day.

It took over two years for the Newlands CID Steering Committee to establish the Newlands Community Improvement District.
The Newlands Community Improvement District was officially voted into existence on 31 May 2024.

FAQs
The Questions and answers below are based on the City's standard list of CID frequently asked questions. However, they have been reworked to specifically tailor them to our area.
What is a CID?
A clearly defined geographical area can apply to the City of Cape Town to become a Special Rating Area - commonly called a Community Improvement District, or CID. CIDs can access additional property rates to fund "top up" services in their area.
Why in Newlands?
Newlands is a suburb blessed with knowledgeable, energetic and committed residents. For years this has allowed us to enjoy levels of cleanliness and security that many people don't fully appreciate. Certainly, the City and national government don't have the resources to deliver many of the services that our residents enjoy on a daily basis.
